Maryland Lawyers for the Arts
Maryland Lawyers for the Arts provides free legal representation for income-qualified artists. For over ten years, Steve Awalt has been a panel attorney, giving him the opportunity to support the arts community in interesting ways. He has represented performance artists to see if their work is a permissible use under existing zoning laws, written contracts for painters, sculptors and actors, represented actors in court on wage payment claims, and reviewed and prepared leases for startup galleries. ABC Cares – Mitch Kearney serves as chairman of ABC Cares, the committee which coordinates the charitable activities of the Baltimore Chapter of the Associated Builders & Contractors. ABC annually participates in fundraising and other activities that benefit organizations such as Boys Hope/Girls Hope, Rebuilding Together, Kids Chance of Maryland, and the Johns Hopkins Children’s Fund.

Attorney Grievance Commission
The Attorney Grievance Commission of Maryland investigates and regulates the ethical conduct of lawyers. For over twelve years, Steve Awalt has served as an inquiry panel member and panel chairman. In this capacity, he has participated in dozens of cases at the initial step in the ethical review process; Steve’s work has included writing the collaborative opinions for the peer view panels. Habitat For Humanity
The Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity rehabilitates Baltimore’s unused housing stock to provide homes for those willing to commit sweat equity, and pay for their homes their the use of supported financing. Steve Awalt has participated in Habitat work crews in Baltimore City, and has been an organizer of work crews for Baltimore-based projects.
